Cardiff
Cardiff a city of many faces, steeped in history and culture yet with a cosmopolitan front and a varied cultural scene. Since its days as the worlds largest coal port Cardiff has had people from every corner of the world settle here and this is reflected in the wide variety of places to eat, from Thai, Chinese and Japanese to Hawaiian. Of course there are also the restaurants that specialise in Welsh cooking including Cawl a delicious leek broth and the national Welsh dish.
Historically Cardiff is an ancient city with a legacy left by the Romans, Normans and the Industrial Revolution. Situated on an 8 acre site in the heart of the city Cardiff Castle covers 2000 years of history. Each room is decorated in its own theme with murals, carvings and stained glass.
The National Museum and Galleries has one of the most extensive collections of impressionist paintings outside Paris. Music has an important place in Welsh life and the Welsh National Opera perform here regularly and of course for the rock and pop fans out there Wales is the home of the Manic Street Preachers, Catatonia and the Stereophonics.
For the shopperholics Cardiff is a dream, with large department stores and all the major chains, but also those little individual shops be it craft or fashion that give Cardiff its uniqueness. Much of the centre is pedestrianised with seating areas and frequently street entertainment. The main streets are connected by glass canopied Victorian and Edwardian shopping arcades making shopping in Cardiff a very different experience.
